Freeze Protection
What do I do if the temperature drops to freezing or below?
1
Ensure the main pool pump runs continuously while the temperature is below freezing. You should have a freeze protection device that will automatically turn the pump on when the temperature drops to around 38 degrees. A freeze protector will keep your pool running as long as the temperature remains close to freezing.
2
Make sure the pool is clean. If your skimmers and main drain get blocked with leaves and other debris, it can prevent the pump from moving enough water to prevent freezing. Even though it’s cold outside, don’t forget to clean the skimmer baskets daily if necessary.
3
Prior to freezing temperatures, please fill your pool to the proper water level. If the water level gets too low, your skimmers will run dry and cause the pump to lose prime. If this happens, there will be no water movement through the pool equipment, and the plumbing is certain to freeze. It is best to disconnect your fill line and cover the hose bib. BMR recommends that you use a dry garden hose to fill your pool when necessary.
4
During extended freezing temperatures, if your pool develops a thin layer of ice do not break the ice up as that can potentially clog your skimmers. You can leave the layer of ice and your pumps will continually run during the freeze.
5
If you have a spa, your freeze protection will alternate between pool and spa mode. During freeze protection, you are unable to heat and utilize your spa due to the system alternating between pool and spa mode.
6
If you lose power or are unable to fill your pool to the proper water level, please see the winterization video. Your water level needs to be at the middle of your tile line and if it drops below the skimmer level, then please refer to the video. This video will walk you through how to turn off your equipment at the breaker and drain your equipment, etc.
